History of IWP
International Wood Products began with the purchase of the Conifer Pacific distribution center in Clackamas, OR in November 1994. As a wholesale building materials company, Conifer was focused on the distribution of commodity items. With the purchase of Conifer, IWP’s goal was to change the focus from commodity items to a broad range of both commodity and specialty products, diversifying the overall product mix. This commitment to a diverse product mix was the foundation of IWP in 1995 and continues today, over 20 years later.
In June of 1995 Terry Hagen joined IWP as President, bringing with him 13 years of experience with Furman Lumber, one of the largest independent distribution chains in the US at the time. Terry’s brother-in-law, Gary Adams, purchased IWP in January 1996 providing a stronger financial base to the company; Terry continued as President. Later the same year, Dave Stelle joined IWP as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, after 19 years with Orepac Building Products, the largest independent distributor on the West Coast at the time. The combined experiences of Dave and Terry brought improved supplier and customer relationships resulting in the acquisition of some major accounts, and their broad background in products enabled IWP to expand and diversify its product mix towards specialty products.
In 1998 IWP was positioned to expand, and made the decision to purchase the assets of Foster’s Wholesale in Medford, OR. Foster’s was a small specialty product wholesaler with a good customer base, yet limited product mix. The potential was there to take what had been done with the Clackamas distribution center and repeat the process in Medford. Adding a second branch in Medford to IWP’s already successful Clackamas location enabled the company to broaden its customer base and territory. Suppliers and customers alike developed a different view of IWP, who as a company had nearly doubled their potential territory and were able to better service Southern Oregon and Northern California markets. Since its purchase in 1998, the Medford distribution center has enabled IWP to gain new sources of supply, and to grow the original vision started only years earlier.
By 2008 IWP was prepared to expand further, opening a branch in Tumwater, WA to serve the Washington market. With many of the same product lines, IWP continued to provide the same foundation of great service built in Oregon to the new distribution center in Washington. In 2010, Doug Hart purchased a majority interest in IWP and became CEO with Dave Stelle assuming the role of President. While the ownership structure changed, IWP’s commitment to service remains the same. IWP continues to expand its customer base and product mix and is today one of the premier building material distributors in the Northwest.
